To Tell the Truth
Video - 2006 - 66m
A journalist's most basic duty is to tell the truth, but not in Communist China. Liu Binyan, a leading Chinese journalist, sought out the truth his whole life and consequently paid a huge price for his honesty. Not only was he kicked out of the Communist Party twice, he was sent to labor camps for more than 20 years. He was often referred to as "the Conscience of China," and in 2003, Liu was named one of Time Magazine's Asian Heros. Through interviews, archival footage, and quotidian scenes, "To Tell the Truth" documents the story of Liu Binyan, his determination to speak the truth, and his struggle to build a freer China.
To Tell the Truth was officially selected for the Docspace Monthly Series of the 2007 Chicago International Documentary Film Festival.
To Tell the Truth was screened at the Alliance Francaise Theater in 2006 as part of the SVA Thesis Group show.
